Well I think it’s really important you know, with the whole character and gifting thing because obviously everyone’s on a different stage in a different place. I always like to take people on the terms where they come, so some people they need a bit more work on the whole ‘how can they craft, how can they get better at what they do?’, other people of course they need a bit more encouragement, you know, how can you really take the next steps into maturity as a Christian.
That why I think it’s really key that the end goal and the focus is not about writing a brilliant song, the end goal is really about being a brilliant lover of Jesus, someone who is just going to follow and be obedient, and I think that’s important because you know then it takes the pressure off the whole song thing. We can easily make that an idol in and of itself and put that right at the centre, and that’s never going to be the end game. I think obedience is really key, so both of those things need to work alongside. It’s often in community, it’s often in maybe being part of something that’s got nothing to do with worship, nothing to do with song writing but growing in another area as a Christian entirely, to really stretch you. It puts the meat on the bones of discipleship so I’d really encourage all those things.
